Weekly sessions run for 30 minutes and include interactive activities such as dot painting, rock art, weaving, stories and much more. A qualified Jellurgal representative will visit your centre and bring all materials required for each activity, all sure to engage and excite each member of the class.

Week 1: Introduction
We will discuss our centre, Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre, and a little about what we do (not too much), then will teach children both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Flags, the meanings behind the colours and provide an activity to end the session. A flag colouring sheet will be provided.

Week 2: Weaving
We talk about what plants we use to weave with and what things we can create e.g. baskets, mats etc. We bring along pictures for the Jarjums to see. Jarjums will then, along with facilitators, help weave their own turtle with coloured strips of paper.

Week 3: Yugambeh language words and counting
We will teach Jarjums how to pronounce colours, numbers and animals in Yugambeh Language. They will be provided with sheets for both colours in English and Yugambeh languages. The same with numbers 1-5 with English and Yugambeh language so they can follow along. This is also the same for our animals then the Jarjums will be given an animal colouring activity to do.

Week 4: Dreamtime stories
Here’s where we tell the Jarjums what our Dreamtime stories mean for us and why we tell them, before we share a couple of local Dreamtime stories with the class. We enable the Jarjums to be interactive and act the stories out with us.

Week 5: Art symbols
We discuss art symbols and how we use them with printouts and a painting. Jarjums will then be provided with a blank piece of paper to try some symbols for themselves.

Week 6: Boomerangs
We talk about the different types of boomerangs we use, explaining how and why they are used. We touch on other weapons we use with props available (for show only). The Jarjums will then be given a chance to paint their own small boomerang to take home.

Week 7: Rock art
In this session, we discuss the artwork on rocks and the different styles from cave paintings to Dreaming stones. We provide laminated pictures of cave paintings and a couple of Dreaming stones the Jarjums can pass around before they go into their activity of painting their own Dreaming stone to take home.

Week 8: Rainbow serpent
We will do a recap on the previous week’s lessons. Jarjums will get to paint their hands on the Rainbow Serpent we have drawn on butcher’s paper for the classroom. Previous props are also included for the Jarjums.
